Here at Russian Bear Kennels, we work to preserve and promote the Black Russian Terrier to the best of our abilities. These are not a breed for the masses but they are a breed for the discerning, who are willing to adopt a new member into the family - not just "purchase" a pet.

Owning a BRT is a lifelong commitment on both you and your BRT’s part. They will give you undivided attention, undemanding love and unbelievable devotion. They will pour their heart and soul into your safety and protection and ask only that you keep them close to you always. They are also addictive - you can never own just one!!

Goodbye to my old girl Basya - you will be missed
Posted by: Helene at Fri Feb 14, 2014 8:21 am
Today I say good bye to my little old lady Basya. She has been a main stay here since the beginning coming over from Ukraine bred to Radomir with my "A" litter. She never had another litter but she was an important part here as she helped to raise pups and comfort them and she was always a calming influence on the whole group. just so you know - Basya was almost solely responsible for the B litter of Brik and Deuce and Kashimer and Oxz and their littermates to survive - they were a litter of 12 born to a newbie mother and an irresponsible owner that Ed and I had to drive to NY to rescue (buy for a ransom) from - they were 3 days old when we got them and Russie didnt have a clue what to do with them - Basya was just done weaning her A litter and so I put her to work with the B litter - and she taught Russie how to clean and care for them - she would lay with half the litter and clean and cuddle them while Russie was nursing the others - she did this often for me and was a huge help to all the moms and their puppies - she babysat with all the litters - up to and including Pumas litter born in July. When she passed this morning everyone howled for about 5 minutes.

She HATED to show but showed as a 12 year old veteran with me at the BRTCA Nationals in St Louis - doing herself proud and me too.

She has never had a sick day (except when she had her puppies and I almost lost her) until last week when she fell and injured herself. She has never had to be on meds of any kind. She did not like being an invalid and on bed rest at all - since I couldnt teach her to ring a bell like most patients do - she took to grumbling loudly if she wanted my attention - so I have been distracted this week while caring for her - she was always there for me, I hope I was there for her. She left me quietly earlier this morning - she has been here so long it is hard to fathom. She would have been 14 in May.

IABCA Intl V Ch, Baltika S Almaznogo Ostrova, CGC, TT, RN - thank you for being a friend.

Award of Merit for Onyx at Westminster!!! Huge Congrats!!!!
Posted by: Helene at Wed Feb 12, 2014 12:46 pm
Yesterday at the Westminster Dog Show in New York - the Odie x Zar son Onyx received an Award of Merit!!! This is a HUGE accomplishment!! Until this past December Onyx had never competed against other BRTS - he attained his AKC Ch the very hard way by getting 4 Group 1s to attain the majors and points needed. When his mom and dad flew with him to Orlando for him to compete at the Eukanuba Dog Show - he also received an Award of Merit!! He has shown a total of 5 times in competition and at the top 2 most prestigious shows in the USA - he received Awards of Merit at each over many other top competing BRTs!! We are very proud of how well he has done in such a short and limited AKC show career. He is FCI Intl CH AKC CH Russian Bears Onyx the Dark Knight - well done!!!

Congrats to all the other participants and winners as well!!!
